Peritoneum

The peritoneum is a thin, transparent, serous membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers the organs within it. It consists of two layers: the parietal peritoneum, which lines the inner surface of the abdominal wall, and the visceral peritoneum, which covers the organs. The peritoneum helps to protect and support the organs, allows for their movement and expansion, and provides a surface for the exchange of nutrients and waste products. It also plays a role in the immune response and the absorption of certain substances.
